چکیده

When learning ultrasound (US) imaging, trainees must learn how to recognize structures, interpret textures and shapes, and simultaneously register the 2D ultrasound images to their 3D anatomical mental models. Alleviating the cognitive load imposed by these tasks should free the cognitive resources and thereby improve the learning process. We argue that the amount of cognitive load that is required to mentally rotate the models to match the images to them is too large and therefore negatively impacts the learning process. We present a 3D visualization tool that allows the user to naturally move a 2D slice and navigate around a 3D anatomical model. The slice is displayed in-place to facilitate the registration of the 2D slice in its 3D context. Two duplicates are also shown externally to the model; the first is a simple rendered image showing the outlines of the structures and the second is a simulated ultrasound image. Haptic cues are also provided to the users to help them maneuver around the 3D model in the virtual space. With the additional display of annotations and information of the most important structures, the tool is expected to complement the available didactic material used in the training of ultrasound

Illustrated Ultrasound for Multimodal Data Interpretation of Liver Examinations

Traditional visualization of real-time 2D ultrasound data is difficult to interpret, even for experienced medical personnel. To make the interpretation during the education phase easier, we enhance the visualization during liver examinations with an abstracted depiction of relevant anatomical structures, here denoted as illustrated ultrasound. The specifics of enhancing structures are available...

Self-monitoring in Non-academic EFL Learners’ Composition Writing

This study investigated the impact of using the technique of self-monitoring on non-academic EFL learners’ composition writing. Fifty female students studying English at Navid English Institute in Shiraz, Iran were chosen based on the results of a proficiency test. They were all 16-20 years old and were intermediate learners of English who were divided into two control and experimental groups a...

Interventional Radiology Virtual Simulator for Liver Biopsy and Nephrostomy

We present here a new simulator for visceral needle puncture training in interventional radiology. This is the result of a close collaboration between different universities, involving computer scientists, clinicians and clinical engineers. Together, we address the need of segmentation, physically-based modelling, haptics rendering, pseudo-ultrasound generation and the conception of a mannequin...

A haptics-based ultrasound examination training system

We present a novel haptic-based simulator for training radiology residents and sonographers. The system consists of a force feedback haptic device that interacts in real-time with registered 3D multi-modality data sets of a subject anatomy, rendered and sliced simultaneously. The proposed system allows to develop radiology expertise with minimum practice on live patients, or in places or at tim...

A Physics-Driven Neural Networks-Based Simulation System (PhyNNeSS) for Multimodal Interactive Virtual Environments Involving Nonlinear Deformable Objects

BACKGROUND: While an update rate of 30 Hz is considered adequate for real time graphics, a much higher update rate of about 1 kHz is necessary for haptics. Physics-based modeling of deformable objects, especially when large nonlinear deformations and complex nonlinear material properties are involved, at these very high rates is one of the most challenging tasks in the development of real time ...
